New York Times Bestseller A Summer Reading Pick for President Barack Obama, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg From a renowned historian comes a groundbreaking narrative of humanity’s creation and evolution—a #1 international bestseller—that explores the ways in which biology and history have defined us and enhanced our understanding of what it means to be “human.” One hundred thousand years ago, at least six different species of humans inhabited Earth. Yet today there is only one—homo sapiens. What happened to the others? And what may happen to us? Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr.

Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book that begins about 70,000 years ago with the appearance of modern cognition. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas. Harari also compels us to look ahead, because over the last few decades humans have begun to bend laws of natural selection that have governed life for the past four billion years. We are acquiring the ability to design not only the world around us, but also ourselves. Where is this leading us, and what do we want to become?

Featuring 27 photographs, 6 maps, and 25 illustrations/diagrams, this provocative and insightful work is sure to spark debate and is essential reading for aficionados of Jared Diamond, James Gleick, Matt Ridley, Robert Wright, and Sharon Moalem. It explains common issues in a very clear and understandable ways. The way the author describes and explains major issues is impressive. He might be provocative but everything he says is logical and makes a lot of sense. Everyone should read this book, especially closed minded people. Hopefully it would make them see things differently. '. Oksana 8/16/2018 ' An awesome book with a fascinating perspective on humans as a species.

A must-read for everyone. '. barb 7/12/2017 ' I'm not really much for reading non-fiction. There, I said it.

Although this was endlessly fascinating, for me it lacked a central thread running through the full book. I got a little lost in all the shifts of perspective.

I listened through to the end, and probably will take another shot at listening some other time, but I think this might be proof that I'm really a fiction reader. '. Pam 7/9/2017 ' Thought provoking, exceptionally well written - I recommend to EVERYONE!

'. Brian 4/20/2017 ' One of the best books I have ever come across.

I have been through it 3 times now and still find it fascinating. It is a wonderful insight into us as a species and should be a must read for anyone. I highly recommend this book, even if you do not think you are a fan of history books.

'. Stefan 4/20/2017 ' It's an amazing achievement what have we humans done so far. But reading this book will teach you that it came with a price for an entire ecosystem and it will help you better understand series of present day occurrences by knowing that they are rooted deep down in our ancestry. '. SW 4/1/2017 ' Although the narration could be a bit pompous at times, this was an enlightening and sometimes wickedly funny journey about humans told from a very interesting perspective.

I laughed out loud several times. Harari shows us how environment changes culture and vice versa. Stories, myths and archetypes give meaning to human lives, but homo sapiens may be on the demise with the advent of artificial intelligence.

Our intelligence, hypocrisy and greed are a pretty bad combo, and the author goes to many lengths explaining that for all of mankind's achievements, we are probably less happy as a whole, compared to back when we were nomadic hunter gatherers. '. Greg 10/3/2016 ' I loved this book and found the narration to be excellent. I travel a lot and have found audiobooks a great way to read while on the go. I actually find I listen better than I read.

Shv e160k 4.0.4 update to 4.1.2. I focus better. '. Geoffrey 8/15/2015 ' Outstanding audio book.

This 'brief' history digs deeper into human evolution than I have ever gotten into. Really cool subjects are covered. I feel better learned about our history after listening to this book.

Only downside: On a long road trip I can only listen to about 30 minutes at a time before getting tired. The upside of that is that by spreading out the listening of this book I probably absorbed more and could have interesting dialogue with friends that were also listening to it.
